Attendance Policy
School attendance is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to ensure a child is attending school and is meeting the required 120 hours of instructional time.
Absences
State law requires that written excuses stating the nature of the student’s absence be submitted when a student returns to school. All excuses are to include the date, reason for absence and need to be signed by the parent/guardian. This information is necessary to minimize the possibility of spreading contagious diseases. In certain instances, a doctor’s release may be required before returning to school.
The Attendance Policy is based on Florida law and requires that when a student accumulates five (5) unexcused absences, the parent/guardian will be notified. When the student accumulates ten (10) unexcused absences, the school must report the student to the social worker. When the student accumulates fifteen (15) days of unexcused absences the student will be reported as a habitual truant.
If a child is out 3 or more days a Dr’s note is required.
According to the OCPS policy, student absences are recorded as unexcused, until the parent provides a written notice within 48 hours of the student’s return to school. After 48 hours the absence will remain unexcused.
Not all absences are excused, even if the parent sends a note. The reason OCPS recognizes that an absence could be excused is the following;
- Illness/Injury or other insurmountable condition
- Illness or death of a family member of the student's immediate family.
- Recognized (or established) religious holiday and/or religious instruction
- Medical/Dental appointments
- Pre-arranged absences with the principals prior approval
- Head lice infestation (up to 4 days per school year)
- Catastrophic disaster that significantly impacts the life of the student (example: loss of residence)
Tardies
Students who arrive at school after 8:45 a.m. are tardy; students must report to the school office accompanied by an adult and get a tardy slip for admission to the class. Repeated unexcused tardies will be reported to the Attendance Office of Orange County Public Schools. A student must be present for 50% of the school day to be considered present for the full day. Any student signing in after 11:30 am will be marked absent.
Sign Outs
Students will not be signed out early during the last 15 minutes of the school day, with the exception of being signed out of the clinic. The last time a student can be signed out is at 2:30 pm Monday to Friday or at 1:30 pm Wednesday. A student must be present for 50% of the school day to be considered present for the full day.
OCPS Policy states that (5) tardies or (5) early sign outs will equal (1) unexcused absence that the attendance clerk cannot change.
If a child's attendance does not improve, an Attendance Warning Conference of school officials will meet with the parent/guardian to develop a series of interventions. If students continue to miss school or show up tardy after interventions, the school Social Worker will initiate a Child Study Team Meeting and legal action may be taken in truancy court.

La asistencia a la escuela es responsabilidad del padre/tutor para garantizar que el niño asista a la escuela y cumpla con las 120 horas requeridas de instrucción.
Ausencias
La ley estatal requiere que se presenten excusas por escrito que indiquen la naturaleza de la ausencia del estudiante cuando el estudiante regresa a la escuela. Todas las excusas deben incluir la fecha, el motivo de la ausencia y deben estar firmadas por el padre/tutor. Esta información es necesaria para minimizar la posibilidad de propagar enfermedades contagiosas. En ciertos casos, es posible que se requiera una autorización médica antes de regresar a la escuela.
La Política de Asistencia se basa en la ley de Florida y requiere que cuando un estudiante acumule cinco (5) ausencias injustificadas, se notificará a los padres/tutores. Cuando el estudiante acumule diez (10) ausencias injustificadas, la escuela deberá reportar al estudiante al trabajador social. Cuando el estudiante acumule quince (15) días de ausencias justificadas, el estudiante será reportado como un ausente habitual.
Si un niño falta por 3 días o más, se requiere una nota del médico.
De acuerdo con la política de OCPS, las ausencias de los estudiantes se registran como injustificadas, hasta que los padres proporcionen un aviso por escrito dentro de 48 horas del regreso del estudiante a la escuela. Después de 48 horas la ausencia seguirá siendo injustificada.
No todas las ausencias son justificadas, incluso si los padres envían una nota. La razón por la que la OCPS reconoce que una ausencia podría ser justificada es la siguiente;
- Enfermedad/lesión u otra condición insuperable
- Enfermedad o muerte de un familiar directo del estudiante.
- Feriado religioso reconocido (o establecido) y/o instrucción religiosa
- Citas médicas/dentales
- Ausencias preestablecidas con la aprobación previa de los directores.
- Infestación de piojos (hasta 4 días por año escolar)
- Desastre catastrófico que impacta significativamente la vida del estudiante (ejemplo: pérdida de residencia)
Tardanzas
Los estudiantes que llegan a la escuela después de las 8:45 a. m. llegan tarde;Los estudiantes deben presentarse en la oficina de la escuela acompañados por un adulto y recibir una nota de tardanza para la admisión a la clase. Las tardanzas repetidas e injustificadas se informarán a la Oficina de Asistencia de las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Orange.Un estudiante debe estar presente durante el 50% del día escolar para ser considerado presente durante el día completo. Cualquier estudiante que se registre después de las 11:30 am se considerará ausente.
Cerrar sesión
No se registrará la salida temprana de los estudiantes durante los últimos 15 minutos del día escolar, con la excepción de la salida de la clínica. La última vez que se puede registrar la salida de un estudiante es a las 2:30 pm de lunes a viernes o a la 1:30 pm los miércoles.Un estudiante debe estar presente durante el 50% del día escolar para ser considerado presente durante el día completo.
La política de OCPS establece que(5) tardanzas o (5) salidas anticipadas equivaldrá a (1) ausencia injustificada que el secretario de asistencia no puede cambiar.
Si la asistencia de un niño no mejora, una Conferencia de Advertencia de Asistencia de funcionarios escolares se reunirá con el padre/tutor para desarrollar una serie de intervenciones. Si los estudiantes continúan faltando a la escuela o llegan tarde después de las intervenciones, el trabajador social de la escuela iniciará una reunión del equipo de estudio infantil y se podrán tomar acciones legales en el tribunal de ausentismo escolar.
